None of The Brothers Four served in the military either, and they were all a little younger than the Trio members. The Bros. did go to Vietnam at least once to entertain the troops. I vaguely remember hearing a story about Kirkland going out on a night-time raid with some soldiers - luckily no harm done.
My own experience with the draft was a little wacky. I had a student deferement until 1967, when I left college to join The New Yorkers (aka, The Hudson Brothers). At some point I received a notice to appear for my physical, but I managed to put that off due to our travel schedule. When I finally couldn't run from it, I considered the Canada option but ultimately bit the bullet and went in for my physical.
I credit Divine Intervention for the fact that I flunked the physical because of high blood sugar and then flunked a follow-up physical for the same reason. I've never had an issue with that since and I guarantee that I didn't do anything intentionally to create such a temporary condition. Wouldn't have known how. So apparently my life was destined to follow another path.
George Grove did serve in the military. He played trumpet in the Army band. For that he gets a free meal at Denny's every Veteran's Day.
