It's well-known that John Stewart was on the campaign trail with Bobby Kennedy when he (Kennedy) was killed, and you can certainly sense John's liberal point of view in some of his music. But the Kingston Trio as a group had a policy of not endorcing any candidates or political issues. You may say that songs like "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" might have crossed that line, but it has never been presented on stage as anything other than a commentary on the sadness of war.
I won't go into the whole story, but there is one that burns me and you can read about it on page 5 of this message board. Scroll down to the thread "Busted by the PC Police" on Sept. 26 & 27, 2007. Then scroll up to "The price of free speech" thread that I started on Oct. 5, 2007 and then there was a follow-up thread called "Free speech revisited" that started on Oct. 12th.
The hardest part about this incident was the fact that I received zero support from any of my musician friends. In fact, they all thought I was wrong to perform songs that had a point of view that they didn't agree with. But this incident did get me airplay nationwide for my song, "Can You Get Me In" (albeit on talk radio) and I became known as the conservative protest singer.
