I seem to recall that we got 3 cents per unit on record sales, which isn't much. Bob Shane was probably correct in stating that individually the group members made more from live performances than from record sales. When Bob bought the KT name, though, he gave up his share of sales royalties, so Nick did make out better on record sales from that point on. Altho, by 1973 (?) KT record sales had dropped off considerably.
As for airplay, I never could understand how that was determined. Performing rights organizations (BMI, ASCAP, etc.) used to track airplay by requiring radio stations to submit a monthly log of music played in a particular 24-hour period. If your current release or album cut got played by chance on that day then it was reported to your performing rights organization and you got paid. But if you got played yesterday or tomorrow, but not on log day, then you didn't get credit. I never understood how that was fair. And I don't know if that system is still in place or not.
