Didn't the Trio also turn down "Green Leaves of Summer"?
Speaking of a hit that clashed with the rest of a group's repertoire, I have to bring up "Brandy, You're A Fine Girl" by a group called the Looking Glass. "Brandy" was entirely different than the rest of the group's material so when fans of "Brandy" came to their concerts, they were shocked and disappointed. Ironically, the pianist for that group, Larry Gonsky, is now a music teacher at the junior high that my three boys attended.
