Another one (again, without looking because I know this story directly from John McEuen) is in the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's version of Mr. Bojangles. The Jerry Jeff lyric is "He looked to me to be the eyes of age as he spoke right out." The Dirt Band sang "...as the smoke ran out."
McEuen says that he had an acetate (remember the Jurassaic Era?) of Jerry Jeff singing the song in the trunk of his car parked outside the studio. (OK - let me clarify that - Jerry Jeff was not singing in the trunk of John's car - that's where the acetate was. Anyway...) He went out and got it and there was no record player (remember the Jurassaic Era?) to play it on, so they rigged up some kind of phony turntable and used a pin with a piece of paper rolled up into cone as the stylus and that's how they learned the song. As the smoke ran out.
