Parodies are a fun way to call attention to a controversial topic. Because the music is familiar, it makes the song easily accessible to listeners. Then the lyrics, which usually follow the rhyme scheme of and bear some faint resemblance to the original song, draw people into the subject matter.
The trick is finding the right song for the right parody. OK - at the risk of going slightly political here, I wrote a parody called "Open Borders" to the tune of "Oklahoma." It's a perfect fit. And one that I include in my show occasionally (I should do this one tomorrow) is a parody of The Eagles' "Deparado", called "Avocado". I don't know who wrote that one, but it's pretty funny - especially after you play the instrumental intro and people are expecting the Eagles song, but out of your mouth comes: "Avocado - what makes you so holy? You're just guacomole to me..."
