As you correctly observed, Martin and Vega were eager to have their products displayed in the hands of the top groups of the day, and most of those photos were staged. Dick and Mike both played tenor guitars at times and Dick occasionally strummed a 4-string banjo, probably tuned to guitar tuning. He also played a ride cymbal with brushes on a few tunes (go figger!). To my knowledge, John has always stuck with his vintage "Greenfields" D-28 on stage.
During my tenure we never used a tenor guitar and Dick never touched a banjo. He mostly played a slot-head Martin with a wide finger-board to accommodate his large hands (don't recall the model - I think he had it custom built). He also played piano and keyboard on some tunes later on.
All that changed when we were each given a Yamaha guitar as a promotional consideraion. I even played my Yamahammer with The Trio for quite awhile until Shane bought me a KT D-28 with my name inlaid on the finger-board. He was in a Martin frame of mind after they produced the commemorative KT set in honor of the group's 40th year. No Yamahas allowed! A couple years after that I switched to tenor and got a very nice 1932 0-18T.
