I had Hereford Percy on banjo, guitar and vocals, Ernie Martinez on dobro, mandolin, guitar, banjo and vocals, Harry Olsson, Jr. on bass and some kid named Graham Haworth on drums, percussion and vocals. What a hot band!
We did a 2-1/2 hour show in a little 130-seat venue in Golden called Miners Alley Playhouse. The place was packed and everybody really had a good time. There was plenty of on-stage interaction between Hereford, Ernie and myself with some really funny moments. I had introduced "The Dutchman" with some background on Alzheimers and then I proceeded to forget the opening lyrics. That theme (forgetfullness) carried on throughout the show.
In the second set we opened with some sing-along stuff and then went into my goofy song, "Folk In A". Later, we started into "MTA", which is in A, and Hereford was tuned in G. Kind of a train-wreck at the start and I turned to Hereford and reminded him: "Folk in A!"
Hereford also told the audience about the first time we met. He was working for the Longmont Symphony at the time and had booked The Trio for a pops concert. I had just finished scoring "One More Town" for our show that night but I arrived in town with only one copy of each part. We spent most of the afternoon copying charts for the orchestra so we could perform that tune in the concert.
After the last night's show we all agreed that we'd had so much fun that we'd better do it again. So now I'm on the hunt for some more venues. I'll let you know if we're coming to a theater near you!
