In defense of Steve Fiott - he did publish some articles (in Sing Out! Magazine, no less)defending the Kingston Trio and pop folk music in general against charges of inauthenticity and crass commercialism. Fiott opined that commercial folk music was just a new manifestation of an old idea - going back to troubadours and so on. I believe the date of the big article was July, 1962. Interestingly, a New Hampshire lawyer was disbarred for (among many other things) billing a client for a call to Steve Fiott four years after Fiott died. The lawyer was a new Hampshire attorney; Fiott is listed in the disbarment papers as having dies on June, 6, 1995.
