I got a DVD recorder for Christmas and I've been considering transferring some of my VCR collection over to disc. If anyone thinks this is immoral, I don't want to hear about it. But in many cases, this seems the only way to preserve some of the material from out-of-print tapes. Not every VCR tape has been or will be released in DVD format, either.
Among my treasures is a VCR of the 1988 "Folk Music Reunion" concert. I took a look at it this past weekend. Over 20 years ago and about 25 years past the heyday of folk music, it was still a treat to see Judy Collins, Glenn Yarbrough, Mary Travers and Tom Paxton, along with the then-current configurations of the Limeliters, Kingston Trio, and Brothers Four.
Seeing it again reminded me of the talents we've lost. Lou Gottleib and Roger Gambill performed, and it pleases me that their legacies have been captured to enjoy over again. (Of course the same thing may be said about friends we just lost in 2008...)
Despite the bittersweet moments, it was still great fun to hear the old songs again and a real hoot to see a courageous younger Bob Haworth in a full beard. He's spoken before about how facial hair and playing the harmonica are a risky mix, but this was the first time I watched and gave it some thought at the same time! I don't think I'll hear "Midnight Special" ever again without chuckling over this particular performance.
Since I am a law-abiding citizen, I of course haven't copied this to a disc. So can anyone tell me if this concert has ever been available on a commercial DVD? And other than the "This Land is Your Land" PBS program, are there any other great folk concert DVDs I ought to add to my collection?
