Hi Bob. I'm glad you and Meri could make it to the festival this year. This thing with the "folkies" and the "dulcimer" groups has evolved over the years, but seemed to hit a peak this year. Robert Force and I were talking about it and thought we might be able to create some interactive opportunities to give the groups an opportunity to become more comfortable with jaming together. I'm not sure it's a matter of "conservative" v "liberal" but perhaps more a lack of experience and comfort level with each other's music styles. The "dulcimer" group actually worked together at and away from the Festival last year on their "Manitou Project." So, this was really their second year together as a defined group.
As for the jam - you're a great musician who can fit into a wide variety of music. I find it more difficult to anticipate chord changes in dulcimer jams. I think I could pick it up if I had some more opportunities to get use to it. That's where Robert's and my conversation was leading - finding to away to allow people the opportunity to get use to each other's music and styles in a comfortable setting. If you've got any ideas for getting the groups together I'd love to talk about it. BTW - there is actually a third group of musicians who just do their sets and don't do any hanging out together. I'd like to find a way to bring them into the mix too.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to a 27th Mt. Music Festival next year on the last full weekend in August.
My best to you and Meri. Enjoy what time the weather allows around your pool. - Tom
