Our Japanese promoter was also doing Cliff's shows, so he invited us to hang out back stage for his show. At that time (maybe still, I don't know), there was a Japanese tradition that at the end of the show, each of the performers was presented with flowers by kimono-clad ladies. We begged the promoter to allow us to present the flowers at the end of the show (sans kimonos, of course) and I positioned myself to be the one to present to Olivia.
Later, we all ended up in the Lipo bar in the basement of the Tokyo Hilton, where we were all staying. We were joined before long by Bob Shane and Roger Gambill of The Kingston Trio, who had done a show somewhere else that evening. As it turned out, it was my birthday, October 9th (1970-something?) and we were surprised to find out that it was also Olivia's birthday. So there were many toasts to our mutual nativity and the evening progressed with raucus hilarity.
I was seated across from Olivia (wanted a good view) and somehow Bob Shane (always on the make) maneuvered himself a seat right next to her. As the liquor flowed, Bob mustered the courage to make his move and to everyone's shock he blurted out to her, "So, can I take you upstairs and **** your ears off?" Olivia turned beat red, finished her drink and politely excused herself.
In her absence, we all turned to Shane and as if in one voice said, "Thanks, Bob!"
I never had a chance to see her in person again, but it was one of my more memorable birthdays.
