Last night I had the priviledge of introducing a lot of people to the music of John Stewart. His catalog of original tunes numbers in the hundreds at least, and I barely scratched the surface with the 13 tunes that I performed. In addition to a packed house of local friends, I was surprised that so many people made the long drive up from Colorado Springs to Lakewood for the show. Ron Fitz, who posts here regularly, was one of the long-distance drivers, and we had a nice chat about John and his influence on our generation.
Here's the list of Stewart tunes that I performed, not necessarily in order:
NEVER GOIN' BACK
DAYDREAM BELIEVER
JULY YOU'RE A WOMAN
RUNAWAY TRAIN
CHILLY WINDS
OH MISS MARY
SONG FOR A FRIEND
ONE MORE TOWN
JASMINE
RUN THE RIDGES
HEART OF A KID
CALIFORNIA BLOODLINES
ROAD TO FREEDOM
and EAST OF DENVER (which Ron pointed out that I forgot to play - DUH!)
I've never really delved into John's music before, but feeling the need to present some of his tunes at my memorial show, I learned about 8 new tunes of his this past week. I was surprised at how easily they came to me and how much I enjoyed playing them. I guess I'll keep them in the repertoire.
We've lost a national treasure and a good friend. But lucky for us, we will always have his music to entertain us and make us think. R.I.P, John Stewart, 1939 - 2008
