I'm actually not the best guy to ask about this sort of thing. However, I will refer your question on to Josh Fuller, who, in my opinion, is an expert on everything - I mean EVERYTHING. This guy is amazing. He drove in from Kansas to play my show last night and he did a fantastic job on stage. This morning he even did some auto repair for me. But he does instrument repair and he knows all about this stuff, so as soon as he gets back home I'll have him log in here and tell you what he knows.
The strings on my Radio Tone are old, but I'm guessing they're a regular medium gauge guitar set. Josh will know more about this, but I've thought of trying some flat-wound strings on it. With round wound strings you do have an issue with slide noise as the slide crosses the windings on the strings. Flat wound strings eliminate most of that problem. The other thing I recall about flat wounds from past usage is that they tend to sound a little "deader" than round-wounds.
I will say this - don't use anything lighter than medium gauge. I would look for a set that uses a .013 for the first string.
Hope that helps a little - I'll have Josh weigh in here in a couple days.
