The fact that the current configuration still relies exclusively on the existing repertoire, as opposed to generating a new catalog, is the one argument for their being considered a tribute group. Once they break away and start recording new material (as the new Oak Ridge Boys did, for example) then they could establish themselves as THE Kingston Trio. As I see no evidence of that ever happening, then I tend to agree that the current group is really just a shadow of the original. As for Shane's comment on David Peel's show - well what can I say. I know he wasn't overwhelmed to see that show advertised. And he's sorta right - except that there are all kinds of tribute groups performing while the originals are still in existence in some form or another. There's no law against paying tribute to somebody, but as Bob points out - it's not the "real" deal. OK - OK - the argument circles back around. The only place you'll ever hear the "real" Kingston Trio now is at Fantasy Camp. And I'll go out on a limb here - the current Kingston Trio is musically more listenable than Bob, John and Nick, as much as we love those guys and ooh and aah over their every note - age has sadly crept up them.
