Not being a native Bostonian, I don't know the answer to the question posed, but the premise for the song MTA never was adequatly explained by the KT in their intro. Instead of raising the fare from 10 to 15 cents, some bonehead politician thought it would be a good idea to keep the fare at 10 cents but charge an extra 5 cents when you got off the train. Only one verse in the song might help figure it out (' the conductor said one more nickle' ), but I played the tune 10 years before someone explained why the song was so funny. If you didn't have that other nickle ( like Charley ) would you ride forever?
