The NGDB is one of my all-time favorites! John McEuen was gracious enough to play on a couple tracks on my CD, "After All These Years." Man, I wish I could play like he does! I first met John in Atlantic City - The Kingston Trio was doing a week-long stint at a place that was the former Playboy club - can't remember what the place was called at the time. John was playing a small room at another casino backed by Runaway Express, a Denver band who have since become good friends as well. In fact, I've recorded many times in their studio here. Anyway, I was fascinated with John's fluidity on the banjo - and then he'd jump right over on the fiddle or mandolin or guitar - he does it all! I noticed that he had his fingernails on his left (fretting) hand grown out kinda long. I asked him why (most players keep them short) - he said he gets more sustain on the banjo by playing on the nail. I never heard of that before and I never tried it, but it works for him!
