As I've said on many occasions, the Clancys and Tommy Makem really started the Irish Ballad boom...in particular over here in the USA. I love the Clancys and the Dubliners (in particular), but really like to track down recordings of the more obscure performers, such as Noel Murphy, Josh MacRae and Nigel Denver. The Clancys & Tommy Makem were really the only “Celtic” performers to become very popular over here—until the Cheiftains—the only other group to even come close were the Irish Rovers. From a popularity stand point comparisons to the Kingston Trio are obvious…although I would image the Clancys and Tommy would prefer to be grouped with the Weavers…
