Hi Bradtot.
Didn't need to carry any extra fuel, but I did carry 20 liters behind the one third rear seat. ULP at William Creek was $1.80 / liter.
The only time I smelt dust was probably the one time I was foolish enough to drive into, (on purpose), a bull dust hole, just to see the effect.
We were on our own, but did talk to other travelers, but not about cars.
Economy is a word that doesn't go with a loaded up Rang Rover. We got 5.2 km/l with a head wind, and 6.3 km/l with tail wind at 100 kph.
Alloy diesel V8 would great. LSE 3.9 is a little sluggish up hills, even with Thor manifold, Bosh injectors and Wolf ECU, when loaded up with three people and pack rack with a head wind.
If you were silly enough you could drive a commodore to Lake Eyre, but it would probably be shaken to bits.
