G`day Pat .
Really i only meant to borrow it .
They are not the type of book that`s used often .
I have a few of these tech type books they don`t get alot of use and most are from spanner days but sometimes they are forgotten about untill late in the piece as nowdays the key board rules .
One bonus of having , reading and understanding this particular book is if you didn`t before hand you will have a much better idea of who knows what when basic engine , reconditioning , modification , theory , Etc are the topic .
It`s was , may still be used in teaching and by trades people , you`ll see from who is mentioned in its creation that it has credibility and when remembering that the predecesor was The Repco Engine Manual and as well as GM , Ford , Chrysler and Leyland the Repco-Brabham people had a hand in it .
You will probably find that your Autopsy Expert won`t be able to answer alot of your questions and you may well be able to tell him a thing or two after reading the book .
Cheers
Peter

: Sorry Pat , thought i was finished then it
: dawned to look at a book .
:
: The book is ... ACL Engine Manual No 413
: Published by Gregory`s Automotive
: Publications
: ISBN 0 85566 680 3
: 1997 reprint
:
: It`s similar or carries on from the Repco
: Engine Service Manual of the 1970s , it`s
: all to do with engines hows and whys builds
: fails measurements etc .
:
: It has a bit on thrust faces and gives pics
: ( not real clear )
:
: Failure .........
:
: When fitting crank and damaging thrust
: surface .
:
: Says wear on 1 face is the norm
: as if from insufficient lubrication
:
:
: Excessive thrust placed on thrust bearing
: for a LONG PERIOD of TIME ( no time frame
: given )such as bad clutch adjust or auto
: with heavy or constant thrust can cause oil
: flow cut off and the flange becomes wiped
: and heated , usually resulting in total
: failure .
:
: { Heated i guess you can work out .
: Wiping or smearing is caused by metal to
: metal contact described as metal being
: displaced (wiped ) and redeposited .}
:
: Crankshaft Thrust Face machined with a rough
: finish can wear into thrust lining causing
: failure .
:
: Suggests if both surfaces have worn ,
: insufficient end play and/or heavy thrust
: loading of the front gears/pulleys/belts .
:
: The book has a section on engine bearings 42
: pages and give descriptions and pics of
: bearing failure and cause etc
:
: If you have a Library near and are able to
: get this or a similar book you could
: diagnose , cause/effect , your big and main
: bearings , there are to many actual pics and
: tech drawings to relay .
:
: The thrust may have failed but the others
: may tell more of the story .
:
: Now i`m finished and i`ll leave you to it .
:
: Cheers
