    Thanks Peter
Yes the rebuilt Auto trans and change over T/C was running behind the 3.9 and I have already checked the thrust bearings they have a small amount of wear but all within allowable tollerances.
I think the thing must have started going bad after the 4.6 was fitted.
I am contemplating finding someone that can test the auto and T/C to see if there was something amiss. As for trying for a claim through the auto/trans rebuilder it's probably not feasible as the warranty period has well and truly lapsed even though the rangie was off the road for twelve months whith the start of that period being only six months after it was rebuilt.
Yep I know of Ashcroft's I might give them a call and see what they have to say.
I know that I have not done anything wrong myself to cause this failure but it's all pretty much academic now.
    Thanks for your support Peter.
    Regards:- Patrick M.

: Hi Pat , it`s all new to me but what i was
: sorta suggesting was maybe the
: trans rebuild is the problem and maybe a
: chat with the recoer is in order .
    :
: Do you know if yours was rebuilt , trans
: /converter or was it change over .
    :
: If you still have the 3.9 have you had a
: look at the centre bearing in it if it ran
: with the rebuilt trans/converter at all .
    :
: Because of the Ks on the 4.6 if the 3.9 ran
: it and that`s where the problem lays , the
    : 3.9 should tell .
    :
: I know the 3.9 may be a bit used but i just
: had a jemmy with a screw driver on one in
: the shed that has about 250K on it and there
: is no seeable movement of the crank . The
: sumps off it and on the engine stand , so
: was doing it at either end .
    :
: Do you know of Ashcroft Transmissions in the
: UK , i`ve only read of them but they seem
: very knowledgable on Zfs as well as other
: things , they also seem very approachable .
    :
: If what is happening with your is actually
    : trans/converter related i`d expect they
: would have heard of it . Send them an Email
: ? Link to their site on top .
    :
: I think anyone you ask you need to not tell
: them what you suspect first though to see if
: it is at all common nowdays as i say i`ve
: not come across it .
    :
: Feel for ya Pat and i don`t see how you
: could have altered the outcome with anything
: you could have done .
    :
    : All the best , Peter .
    :

    : Hi Peter
: Thankyou very much for the link it probably
: hits the nail on the head, even though the
: tranmission and torque converter were
: rebuilt not so long ago
: I now can appreciate that this maywell be
: the only explination as to what has gone
: wrong, thanks again for your time and
    : efforts.
: Yeah the centre bearing which has the thrust
: bearings attached to the top half is the
: problem and the rear side facing the gearbox
    : was completely worn away.
: F&%k, looks like I have to rebuild the
: autotrans, torque converter and engine
: again, just what I needed.
    : Regards:- Patrick M.

    :
: Pat , the link should work have a read .
    :
: Note the dates given 1980s , things may be
    : very different by 1992/3 .
    :
: I seem to remember you saying your trans was
    : rebuilt recently .
    :
    : I wouldn`t have thought a converter could
: balloon but this suggests they can and being
: ZFs run high pressures ?
    :
: Spent some time googling and nothing like
: your problem being Rover specific could be
: found and if a fault is common it is usually
    : well reported .
    :
: Still think the centre bearing should be the
: tell though and it should be one side worn
: more if the diagnosis is correct .
    :
    : cheers
