The clearance I am refering to is when you have installed the torque converter into the gearbox before fitting the engine, the faces of the block mounts on the converter are supposed to measure 51mm to the face of the bell housing if you donot have that measurement then the torque converter is not engaged properly into the gearbox and if you fit the engine at this point and bolt it all together the converter will put forward pressure on the flex plate and crankshaft. So if you have the T/C engaged in it's proper position there should be a clearance of some millimeters between it and the flex plate once the engine is in position and before you bolt it all together.
When I undid the flexplate converter bolts to remove the engine I was able to slide the converter back nearly 15mm away from the flex plate, which would indicate to me that there is sufficient clearance there, is this not so?
I am at a loss as to how there could be pressure on the crank, unless oil pressure from the gearbox is excessive and forcing the T/C forward but I was informed that this cannot happen!!!!!!!
and if this was the case surely the flex plate would show evidence of this force being applied to it.

: Hello Patrick are you talking about the
: flywheel/ring gear plate to block clearance?
: I actually did this yesterday when i fitted
: the assy together on the 3.9 I am fitting to
: my Rangie.the measurement was from the
: manual.... Check the setting height.
: Drive plate setting height A = 8.08 to 8.20
: mm.
: which is adjustable by different shims. I
: fitted the original shim I had and did the
: check and it was 8.1mm so Ok. However I got
: to thinking that it is a very small
: tolerance for such a large amount of metal
: that is going to be attached. I remember
: when I undid the torque converter bolts I
: could spin the converter with the old motor
: and gearbox in situ, when I refitted with
: new different motor I could do the same but
: as far as I could see there was about half
: to 1 mm clearance between the driven plate
: and the converter so how can u stuff this up
: by putting in a new motor?
:
: You would have seen or felt something not
: right when you tried to do up the converter
: bolts surely? Was the converter removed when
: this new motor was fitted?
: I really think that what you are being told
: is crap. the motor lasted 9k so in that time
: if something was not right u would have seen
: or felt something. I have heard of the
: torque conv not sitting right when the
: converter was off when the motor and gearbox
: are mated but this stuffs up the pump gears
: therefore making the vehicle not drivable in
: the first instance...,not 9k later.
: I did not remove my converter and I know it
: did not move as I marked it!
: I would fight this as far as I could go!!
: Who gave you this opinion anyone I would
: know here in the west?
: if you dont want to say here ring me

: Hi Blokes
: As you probably now know the "NEW"
: 4.6 engine which has done an astounding
: 9,825 Kilometers and now shit itself (a real
: piece of endurance work). We had the autopsy
: done on it today here in WA instaed of
: sending it back to Victoria to where I
: bought it from, it turns out that every main
: bearing except for one or two has had
: something through it and the rear thrust
: bearing on the crank has about a millimeter
: of metal missing off it's surface, most of
: the big ends are stuffed as well.
: Although I have not yet discussed the
: results of the autopsy with the people I
: purchased the engine from to any real depth
: it appears highly unlikley that it will be
: claimable on warranty. Being that the rear
: thrust bearing has failed which they say is
: due to an "EXTERNAL FORCE" being
: applied to the crankshaft from the gearbox
: side and that I probabably have not coupled
: the motor and gearbox together correctly
: which is not true as we check and double
: checked the measurement for the proper
: clearance.
:
: Anyway at this point in time I would like to
: know if any of you have bought a 4.6 motor
: and had a similar failure with it.
: Please get back to me if you have as I am at
: a loss (so is the autopsy expert) as to what
: has caused this failure.
:
