G`day Pat , not good and i`m no help ,
don`t know the age of your new 4.6 but ...

On later 4.0 and 4.6 the book says there is no need to check the height setting .

It says engines up to 42D00593A and up to 46D00450A need to have the height setting done .

The book also says the height setting is to " prevent drive plate distortion " .

As for the crank end float which is given as 0.10 to 0.20 mm , the book says ..

Crankshaft end float is controlled by thrust faces on upper half of centre main bearing shell . ( Note it says centre )

So if the theory of External Force from gearbox side is correct , if the centre bearing limits end float wouldn`t that be the place the problem would be more obvious ?

    The Book is .... 3.5 , 3.9 , 4.0 , 4.2 & 4.6
    V8 Petrol Engines
    Overhaul Manual

Publication Numbers LRL 0164 and LRL 0004

The part used is from the 4.0 & 4.6 Manual
Land Rover UK Limited 1997/98 and Brooklands Books 1999 .

    Cheers

    : Hi Blokes
: As you probably now know the "NEW"
: 4.6 engine which has done an astounding
: 9,825 Kilometers and now shit itself (a real
: piece of endurance work). We had the autopsy
: done on it today here in WA instaed of
: sending it back to Victoria to where I
: bought it from, it turns out that every main
: bearing except for one or two has had
: something through it and the rear thrust
: bearing on the crank has about a millimeter
: of metal missing off it's surface, most of
: the big ends are stuffed as well.
: Although I have not yet discussed the
: results of the autopsy with the people I
: purchased the engine from to any real depth
: it appears highly unlikley that it will be
: claimable on warranty. Being that the rear
: thrust bearing has failed which they say is
: due to an "EXTERNAL FORCE" being
: applied to the crankshaft from the gearbox
: side and that I probabably have not coupled
: the motor and gearbox together correctly
: which is not true as we check and double
: checked the measurement for the proper
    : clearance.
    :
: Anyway at this point in time I would like to
: know if any of you have bought a 4.6 motor
: and had a similar failure with it.
: Please get back to me if you have as I am at
: a loss (so is the autopsy expert) as to what
    : has caused this failure.
    :
    : Regards:- Patrick M.
