Excellent Ned
I was there way back in about 1983 and it had water in it up to the time we arrived there but was as you say receding very quickly, the spot we went to was around the Price Peninsula.
Back then we were travelling around Aus supposedly for two years in an old Toyota FJ55 and a 24foot caravan, anyway I decided that I had to have a drive on "THE LAKE" and guess what, Yep I got bogged, it took six hours to get the old FJ55 back out and onto solid ground.
From that little exercise I gained about twenty years of experience for bottomless mud driving.
Hope you don't do the same as I did, but have a great time doing it mate.
A little tip, if you do decide to drive on "THE LAKE", let your tyres down and drive on it first thing in the morning, that is if you really have the urge or nerve to do so.

: Just a quick trip to the bit with water in it,
: and hope to see the pelicans. I hope there
: is still water there in three weeks time. It
: is soaking in and evaporating faster than
: the inflow, that has almost finished.
: Doesn't really matter, the driving is the
: part I enjoy.
