Solved!!!! I kept thinking it has to be simple, that the RAC guy couldn’t/wouldn’t have done much in the few minutes he was under the bonnet in the rain, so I went through everything I could find and at the point where my wife said he fiddled before he declared the fuel pump dead I found the small molded hose was broken on the Branch of crankcase breather going to the inlet side of the Plenum, replaced it and it runs just like it did before.
