    Hi Sneezy

I think the small spade terminal is a direct feed to the coil to boost the voltage when starting on the old motors with an inline ballast resistor.

Mine is now disconnected as it shorted on the exhaust (causing misfiring & then engine stop..).

It's no use anyway as far as I can see as I never re-connected it while I ran the Lucas dizzy.

    : Thanks Pete and Ned,
    :
: I really should just get it out and take the
: solenoid apart....it's the culprit at the
: moment. My solenoid has 2 spade connectors
: on it...1 is from the ignition and the other
: seems to go from the solenoid to the
: coil....is this one needed as several years
: ago on a trip to NZ I bought a solenoid kit
: which includes the cap etc. The new cap
: doesn't have the small spade connector on
: it. Perhaps I have the wrong bit or wonder
    : if it's not necessary.
    :
: I spose the easy thing to do is
: remove/disconnect it and see what
: happens...if the truck burns to the ground I
    : wouldn't be that worried....I'll have a can
: of petrol to try and put it out if needed...
    : ...
    :
    : regards

    : G`day sneezy ,
    :
: Yep , physically bolt up the same .
    :
: There could be a difference in how the 2 are
: wired as in the number of wires but i`m sure
    : that won`t be a problem for you .
    :
: If you`re looking at new the following
: doesn`t apply and will be a waste of space .
    :
: One thing i`d suggests is that the newer
: smaller type starters hit alot harder that
: the older large type .
: The older type are more forgiving if there
: is a bit of bearing/bush and tooth wear as
: in when they make the initial mesh of the
: teeth they are gentler in the process and
: allow the teeth to fully mesh before any
: great pressure is applied .
    :
: The newer type have a better ability for the
: pinion gear to try to climb up over the ring
: gear teeth and depending on the brand of
: starter can break the nose off the starter
: or break or squish teeth .
    :
: All i`m really saying is if you use a
: secondhand starter it is worth the time to
: check the pinion gear/tooth wear and the
: front bush/bearing wear and don`t just take
: the word of the seller .
    :
    : Cheers
    :
