Hello Neil,
Most cost effective way to improve the performance of your 1989 rangie? Trade it in! As has been stated, a 4.6 upgrade done properly wil set you back multuples of the value of the vehicle. Supercharging- around 10-12k. Even a 4.4, done properly, will cost probably double the value of the vehicle- that is the route I took with my 88RR a few years back- goes well, but had I known the final cost before I started, I would not have done it. The thing is that every other component of the vehicle will still be 20 years old.
How many kilometres has your engine done? I would suggest that you are probably feeling the lack of power of a tired 3.5, as opposed to just a 3.5. I would advise that you pull the camshaft out of your engine and have a look at the lobes- they are probably close to round. You may well find that with a new cam and lifters, you are surprised by just how well a 3.5 goes.
As far as add-on bits go, absolutely no point in adding things on to a tired engine. I'd be happy to discuss my experience of a 4.4 upgrade if you wish.
Regards
Peter

: Hi All
:
: I have a 1989 RR with the 3.5L V8.
:
: I would value your opinion on the most
: cost effective!! way of increasing the
: performance of the beast.
:
: Ways of boosting the performance that I
: have considered so far are:
: 1. Supercharging / turbocharging
: 2. Increased capacity (3.9, 4.6, 5.0)
: 3. Engine change (5L / 5.7L Holden)
:
: Does anyone have any advise /
: experience on the above?
:
: Thanks
: Neil
