It's been a while, so my guess is that you've solved the problem and are now happily motoring with big sparks from the HEI.
My experience is rather different to yours. I used a Buick dizzy and therefore had to grind away the inlet manifold. Had to change the six pronged star to an eight, then shoved it in. Ran perfectly, even though I tuned it by ear. Never had a backfire after that. She started every time without fuss ... I became a convert to big sparks. Without experiencing any problems, I can't offer any advice, and I'm guessing everything is fine by now so you really don't need any more input. (Just a thought ... I did get rid of most of the original Rover wiring and made sure I had a constant 12 volts to the dizzy all the time) Keep enjoying.
