I have not been able to find any info about the modules other than a US website for aftermarket modules that seemed to offer only one module for all HEI. The module is as you say, a flat box, qwith angled ends, almost banana shaped and with 2 pins at each end. So unless I have struck two dud modules, that is not it. The wires to the dizzy cap are on a separate component which has a condensor attached. I replaced that at one point so that should not be an issue. The only part that I've not replaced is the coil that goes around the shaft to pick up the firing signal. It does involve wires, so maybe I will replace that. After that, maybe the coil which was supposed to be brand new & looks it is a dud. I've had new and near new coils go belly up before. Thanks for your thoughts - always good to have someone look at a problem from another angle. Cheers Hamish :

: Hi Hamish
:
: Thinking on it and yep i reckon module
: or its wires but guessing .
:
: The first fried because of the lack of
: heat sink and the reason it stopped
: after warming up .
:
: Maybe try refitting the first module
: and if it runs on all cylinders before
: it stops , it may be telling where the
: problem is ?
:
: The second running with a lack of
: cylinders says to me module also ......
: the timing bit could be because it
: triggers the coil and it is failing
: internal but again guessing .
:
: I have ACA parts manual that with other
: componets has ignition modules which
: also has a sub cat which covers NZ only
: .
:
: As i say i know very little about these
: dissys ......
:
: In the listing for CHEV it give 196 CID
: through 454 CID 1974 through 1989
: ...inline 6 and V6 and V8 as all using
: the same module .
:
: Same for BUICK 173 CID through 455 CID
: inline 6 , V6 and V8 , same module .
:
: Same for Pontiac which is similar to
: Buick capacities , etc .
:
: Some Alfas , Fiats , Jaguars , Jeeps ,
: Lancias ,Peugots , Renaults and 3500
: Vitesse Rovers .
:
: The same module is used in all the
: above .
:
: It is rectangular with curls or angled
: ends , it has two mounting holes .
:
: On one end there are to male spade type
: , same size .
:
: On the other end there are two male
: spade type , one smaller than the other
: and the larger of the two is shorter
: than the two on the other end .
:
: Interestingly and a different module
: than above but .....for 3.5 ltr it give
: a listing for NZ RR 85 on as being
: different to AU RR 87 on as in
: different part number and the pics show
: them as different .
:
: The AU RR 85 and 86 are different to AU
: RR 87 but that`s because they don`t
: have the module on the dissy .
:
: The NZ 85 RR must have the module on
: the dissy because of the shape of the
: module .
:
: Cheers , Peter .
