Posted by peter r on July 14, 2007, 1:38 am, in reply to "Noisy Lifters??" Read it when you posted but been thinking on it and i guess you know i have trouble doing shorthand . Only a couple of things i can think of and other than the oil are searching ideas . If lifters are to be a problem when they are new or worn , i would expect to be the times . A bloke who used to visit here put a short in his 90RR he did preload and had ticks, he said something about not the right lifters , got new/right lifters and it still ticked and as some do they hold their cards close to their chest so little was learnt , other than it probably wasn`t the lifters at fault , he was going to put up with it , last heard I have read/heard of a few 4.0ltr D2s around 100K having new lifters replaced with new lifters and still ticking but not from start more usual after warm and from what i can find out preload hasn`t been checked but these are people paying to have it done so also little learn`t . I don`t think they sound anything like similar sounds but some people mistake a leaking manifold for a lifter tick which can stop as the engine warms up . I know the thinner oils are recommended for the later 4.0/4.6 but the earlier 4.0/4.6 had the recommendation of the same oil as 3.5/3.9 20W50 . The main difference between the late and early is the fuel injection but the mechanical parts are the same . All factory original 4.0/4.6 run hotter than 3.5/3.9 and the later ( with Bosch ) run leaner in spots , this may be the reasons for the oil recommendation in the later . If you have synthetic or 15W or 5W maybe changing to 20W will help with the problem . Since you`ve done the preload and if it was too little ( shims too thick ) it would be more likley to rattle all the time or when warm at idle , i would think . As i understand the oil pressure is greatest when cold , not quite as great as cold when warm and at 2500 rpms and much lower at idle when warm so this says your lifters are doing as they should other than at cold start . Another thought is that because the engine is breaking in there are going to be particles floating around the oil system and maybe these are upsetting the lifters but only after resting and come good with the oil flow . Another is maybe the lifters are sticking in there bores ( block ) and not rotating untill it starts to warm . I understand the Ks but has it always done as it is ? I used holden type lifters in our short and it makes no noise , the 3.5 it replaced wore a set out on a none factory cam and also made no noise and i have another 3.5 with same type with very worn and it made no noise . Cheers , Peter . --Previous Message--

G`day Brad
Also have 2 6cyl VK holdens and the only time they tick is when they need oil .
: Hi Guys,
:
: I have replaced my old 3.9L V8 (as
: some of you know) reasonably
: recently with a new 4.6L V8. The
: setup was a brand new block with
: reco heads, new cam, tappets rockers
: etc.
:
: I have done about 1000km with the
: new engine and notice that when cold
: starting the engine in the morning
: (as cold as it gets in Darwin
: anyway) that there is quite a lot of
: what seems like lifter noise for a
: second or 2. The noise pretty much
: quietens down straight away.
:
: Until the car warms up a bit (a
: minute or so) there is a bit of
: discernable lifter tick. Once the
: engine is warm, it runs nice and
: quiet.
:
: When I put the cam, lifters, push
: rods and rocker assemblies together,
: I purchased a shim kit for the
: rocker shaft mounts and set
: pre-loads as per instructions on
: both the shim kit packet and the RPI
: V8 website (can't remember the
: tolerance I used but obtained and
: verified these tolerances with the
: Land Rover rep in Adelaide where I
: purchased the engine).
:
: Just seems odd firstly with the cold
: start noise and subsequent lifter
: tap. Previous rangie engines I have
: had have never had that initial
: noise and only have lifter tick
: after the timing gear starts to
: wear.
:
: My question is if anyone else has
: had this sort of thing occur and
: whether or not it is normal for
: Hydraulic Lifters to lose their
: prime??
:
: Any help or experience would be
: appreciated.
:
: Thanks
