    Re: Noisy Lifters??

I have done top end rebuilds on both my Disco and Rangie 3.9 engines and replaced the lifters in both, although I did'nt check the pre-loads, both engines have a decernible lifter noise when first started and once warmed up quitening down a large degree, the Rangie being the most noisy of the two, I suspect that the lifters supplied are of different types, If memory serves one of the more popular cheap substitutes is the holden lifters and we all know how noisy they are. A mate of mine did a top end rebuild on his Rangie and when purchasing the replacement lifters asked for cheaper units than the original equipment, the people he purchased them from told him he would be better off sticking to original stuff and lowered the price so that they were more affordable and competitive with the cheaper replacements, after he started it up and ran it in I was somewhat dissapointed in the performance of the ones that I had been given when comparing his to mine.
Next time I'll be more the wiser and use originals.
Some people will argue that the holden units can rev a lot harder than the originals but this argument has been proven untrue by the powers that be.
I don't know if this information is of any use to you or not but I am considering pulling out the units I have been given especially in the Rangie as it just don't seem right for such a stately vehicle to be ticking away like a "Bloody Diesel".

    : Hi Guys,
    :
    : I have replaced my old 3.9L V8 (as
: some of you know) reasonably
    : recently with a new 4.6L V8. The
: setup was a brand new block with
: reco heads, new cam, tappets rockers
    : etc.
    :
: I have done about 1000km with the
: new engine and notice that when cold
: starting the engine in the morning
: (as cold as it gets in Darwin
: anyway) that there is quite a lot of
: what seems like lifter noise for a
: second or 2. The noise pretty much
    : quietens down straight away.
    :
: Until the car warms up a bit (a
: minute or so) there is a bit of
: discernable lifter tick. Once the
: engine is warm, it runs nice and
    : quiet.
    :
: When I put the cam, lifters, push
: rods and rocker assemblies together,
: I purchased a shim kit for the
: rocker shaft mounts and set
: pre-loads as per instructions on
: both the shim kit packet and the RPI
    : V8 website (can't remember the
: tolerance I used but obtained and
: verified these tolerances with the
: Land Rover rep in Adelaide where I
    : purchased the engine).
    :
: Just seems odd firstly with the cold
: start noise and subsequent lifter
: tap. Previous rangie engines I have
: had have never had that initial
: noise and only have lifter tick
: after the timing gear starts to
    : wear.
    :
: My question is if anyone else has
: had this sort of thing occur and
: whether or not it is normal for
: Hydraulic Lifters to lose their
    : prime??
    :
: Any help or experience would be
    : appreciated.
    :
    : Thanks
    :
