    Noisy Lifters??

    Hi Guys,

I have replaced my old 3.9L V8 (as some of you know) reasonably recently with a new 4.6L V8. The setup was a brand new block with reco heads, new cam, tappets rockers etc.

I have done about 1000km with the new engine and notice that when cold starting the engine in the morning (as cold as it gets in Darwin anyway) that there is quite a lot of what seems like lifter noise for a second or 2. The noise pretty much quietens down straight away.

Until the car warms up a bit (a minute or so) there is a bit of discernable lifter tick. Once the engine is warm, it runs nice and quiet.

When I put the cam, lifters, push rods and rocker assemblies together, I purchased a shim kit for the rocker shaft mounts and set pre-loads as per instructions on both the shim kit packet and the RPI V8 website (can't remember the tolerance I used but obtained and verified these tolerances with the Land Rover rep in Adelaide where I purchased the engine).

Just seems odd firstly with the cold start noise and subsequent lifter tap. Previous rangie engines I have had have never had that initial noise and only have lifter tick after the timing gear starts to wear.

My question is if anyone else has had this sort of thing occur and whether or not it is normal for Hydraulic Lifters to lose their prime??

Any help or experience would be appreciated.

    Thanks

301
