Caretaker boss makes bid for job
by MATT DAVIES
POTENTIAL Bedworth United boss Liam O'Neill is sweating on the fitness of central defender Danny Pitham ahead of the tough looking match at home to Romulus tomorrow.
The caretaker manager was thrilled with his side's first win since August against basement boys Berkhamsted Town last week - a victory he hopes has taken him a step closer to landing the Greenbacks job permanently.
But the game against BGBL Midland Division fifth placed side Romulus at The Oval (kick-off 3pm) looks far more daunting on paper.
O'Neill said: "It was a great win against Berkhamsted. I told the players before the match that they will win a game eventually, we just had to make sure it wasn't us they beat.
"The first half was tough but we dominated the second. There is a real belief in the team now. But Saturday will be a difficult challenge.
"Romulus are a big, physical route-one side that has been together for a number of years. We will have to try to out play them to get something from the game."
Pitham missed the Berkhamsted match with a thigh strain but should he miss out again O'Neill would happily field an unchanged side.
"Danny is a quality player and would normally be one of the first names on the team sheet. Even so I would be looking to name the same 11. I told the players that if you play well then you keep the shirt and I'll try to stick to that," he said.
O'Neill is yet to formally apply for the manager's job but he has made no secret of his desire to be given the position.
"I'm desperate for the job. I feel the players are desperate for me to get it. They've been fantastic so hopefully things will work out," he said.
