Liam O`Neill has put himself firmly in the frame for the manager`s job at British Gas Business Southern League Division One Midlands club Bedworth United.
He has been occupying a caretaker role since the departure of Martin Sockett three weeks ago.
But after watching the Greenbacks achieve their first league win since August, O'Neill said: "I`m loving the job so much that I want to keep it. In fact, I will be devastated if the board appoint someone else."
Applications for the position are still open until November 20th and O'Neill admited: "I have not actually put anything in writing but I have made it perfectly clear that I want to stay in charge.
"Running the team is giving me a real buzz and the response and respect I have received from the players has been tremendous.
“I had already decided this was going to be my last season as a player, as I am 34 now and was looking to move onto the coaching side.
"But since I have been managing the Bedworth team, I have not missed playing one bit and it has actually surprised me how much I am enjoying the job."
O'Neill (pictured) has been at the helm for five games. Bedworth drew away and then lost a replay in the FA Trophy against Hillingdon Borough; they went down 1-0 in an errea Cup tie at Leamington and then drew in a home league game with Dunstable Town before picking up full points with a 2-0 win at Berkhamstead Town last weekend.
"That was a great result," said O'Neill. "The players did everything I asked of them and I could not have been more pleased. Now I am hoping we can build on that for Saturday`s game against Romulus at The Oval.
"It will not be easy. They are fifth in the table and are a tough side. But our recent displays have showed that our players have started to believe in themselves. They are playing with confidence and have proved we can compete with anyone at this level."
