Dear Jeff, I think it was a little of each. I started to play piano when I was three years old and eventually came up through the Jazz scene in London UK where I was born.I am self taught, but managed to get a year at the College of Marin, San Francisco Univ., when I was 41 years old and already had a career in music. Basically I wanted to see how music was taught, and as I could only afford one year, I took 10 classes. This was exhausting but I ended up with nine "A"s and a B+. This gave me a good idea where I sat in the system and gave me a lot of confidence. So I'd say my early love of music was God given, but anything I play can be learned and I have been playing for many years, so don't give up. ALL THE BEST BRIAN
