I hope the recent debacle with local promoters didn't sour you on Kansas City -- I'd love to see you come through. My daughter lives in St. Louis, so if you're in that area I could kill two birds with one stone!
We actually met once. I believe it was 1973 or `74 when I was helping with live radio broadcasting out of a little nightclub, Madame Lovejoy's, in what is now the River Market area north of downtown Kansas City . As I was leaving at about midnight, my Renault 4 CV parked down the street from the club wouldn't turn over, so I trudged back up the hill (stepping over the occasional wino) looking to get a push so I could jumpstart my old car. When I got back to the club, something happened which I consider divine providence, or because of my ridiculous proclivity towards old French cars -- you had stepped in for a late-night jam! If memory serves, you sat in on my old B3 with its Marshall powered Leslie cabinets. You were in town opening for Herbie Hancock at a concert, I believe at the Midland Theatre, which I saw the next night.
At any rate, I came across your web site after thinking about the ripping organ solo in Indian Rope Man, surfing the web for that song (which I found), and reminiscing about the good old days with some old musician buddies. After reacquainting myself with some of your material I realized how much of an inspiration your style was in my own playing. Although because of health reasons I can no longer play (I was an active musician/songwriter for 25 years), I just wanted to thank you for bringing such uplifting music to the world. Though I'm sure you don't remember all those years ago (I can barely remember it myself!!), our meeting taught me how someone possessing great talent can also embody both modesty and kindness......
Sincerely, Craig Sherry
