As a responsible person, even your sub-concise mind, is attuned to your dog, after you have created a dog like this. I would become coherent enough to turn my dog off, then back to the important matter at hand ... sleeping.
Me, knowing my dog in a neutral situation, a growl was a warning to someone, that they were about to screw up.(This is the normal God instilled behavior in dogs. I don't teach this) It takes an overt action(in a neutral situation) with my dog, to set him totally off. I like to have a little comfort zone, before he eats someone.
Some folks like a sharper edge on their dogs than that. You are the one feeding the dog, and so how you want the dog to respond is CORRECT.
