Leo(nidas) scored a 274 SG, 99-94-81 under German judge Walter Reinhold.
It was very cold and raining. I showed up late and at the wrong field so I missed the tracking. I was pleasantly surprised to soon hear that Leo had passed the tracking course with a score of 99. He’s a little thin in the pictures below because a lot of his food was earned on the tracking field, so that was why I was surprised he scored so high, he wasn’t a natural like his mom. Later I heard a spectator comment on how he was a “beast” when it came to tracking. He witnessed him lose a scent and continue to search for it for 45 minutes during one of his training sessions.
OB we knew would be a problem. Leo was refusing to sit completely on the cold, wet ground. Being a man, I completely understood. He did really well in OB, most of his points off came from “hovering” on the sit commands, so he scored a 94. The judge came to me and Bryan several times and thru a translator told us how truly impressed he was by his OB. Mainly because of the type of dog he was, he was surprised and impressed by the control Bryan had over him.
At this point, Leo had a comfortable lead going into the Protection phase. Protection we knew was going to be a big problem, because Leo can be dirty and has no respect for the helper. The blinds we thought, incorrectly it turned out, was going to be his only problem. Bryan sent him around the first blind, and I swear I could see it in his speed, eyes, and body language that he knew he was free of Bryan and any form of correction and the bulldog in him took over. He hit the blind with the decoy, barked and held once, and then the fight was on. It took a couple of outs to get him off, went back to the fight after outing, but surprisingly let go and heeled perfectly besides Bryan when he came to get him. It was dead quiet in the audience, besides for me laughing. The next exercises it took a couple of outs each to get him off, thank goodness he let go, but I was enjoying it because it looked like he was having fun out there.
Leo ended up tied with a Shepherd for highest Schutzhund 1. The judge was really impressed by his power. But he thought he was crazy, compared him to a “boar”, and asked me how he was around kids and other people. He kind of told me he was too much for Schutzhund, but backed off a little because of the control in OB. Leo is a somewhat young dog, turned 2 in August and has only been training hard for a year, so as long as he’s enjoying it and we don’t have to break his spirit, I’m expecting good things from him.
