I fully agree ont he health/temperament culling for breeding dogs. I do observe my litters being whelped so if there's a problem I can step in as well.
I allow my b###hes to clean their pups, but I for one will clip the umbilical cord to insure no hernia's are caused. (I watched a first time b###h rip a pup right out and it was aweful).
As long as there are no problems I will not interfere otherwise. After she's done her job I will check them out make sure they are breathing well and weigh, measure and write down description and sexes.
I've done the whelp every pup and remove sac, towel dry and then hand to the female and I have to admit its not necessary if she can do it herself. Also makes for second litters to be more difficult if she hasn't done it the first time by herself.
I for one love and invest way too much money in my dogs to allow somethingto happen when i could have easily just pulled a pup out if it were stuck or cleared the sac from its face while mom rested.
