I agree. All of my dogs take the silent approach until they see what the threat is. Then its all hell breaks loose with the barking and growling if they feel its a real threat.
My personal protection dog thats with me all the time (Precious) is silent the whole time staring down whatever it is until theres a reason for her to bark. If say someone/something comes at me she'll start up with the mad barking growling and carying on. (and i know from experiance she will back it up!)
Now I have Hank here, who's started the alerting. I think he got it mostly from being around my boel's since i've gotten him here. Once he senses or see's something he starts up and doesn't stop until its gone.
It personally drives me nuts. I'm used to the very very quite "Huff" and then the investigative stare that gives me time to find out whats going on and to see what the threat is myself. That way I can determine if theres a real threat or not...
Just wondered what everyone personally prefered on their home turf.
