Posted by Lucas Bailey Leaner Sherman Bailey ("Pa"), was born in Danville Virginia between 1846->1864. The exact year i do not know , but some conclusions can be drawn from the following. he was approximatley 49 years old when he married "Ma" (Maude Billingsly) in 1898 ot 1899. Also i have seen two pictures where he is identified with Belle Starr. Bell star was born between 1846 and 1848. I don't know if he went with her before she married star while he was married to starr, while she was married to starr or after starr was killed; anyway i don't believe starr would have gone with a much younger punk, but, who knows.

The furthest back i have gotten with the Bailey's is to Danville WV, which used to be part of VA. This is what i've got so far: (this is typed exactly as written by my grandfather, as to not mistakenly leave out possible vital info)
Pa was born befre 1864 because he was born in Danville, Virginia, which is now in the stat of west virginia. Also i have heard the story told about his mother hanging the "long handle" or "red flannel" underwear on the clothes line when it was unsafe for him, his father and brothers to come home, which side they, the baileys, were on during the civil war, i don't know. I believe some where union and some where confederate; i have asked pa and never had a straight answer--maybe outlaws.
Pa never dropped his middle name sherman, which was the most ated name of all the union generals in the south, shermans march to the sea; but he left virginia during, after, or before the civil war for the west, Arkansas, Kansas, Colorado, and the Oklahoma Indian Territory, which could indicate they wer confederates (or outlaws) in the strongly pro-union area of WV.
Pa has told the story of the fortune he misse, going west from arkansas to an unknown destination, they were travelling by buckboard; at the juncture of two streams they decided to make a cache of supplies that could not be carried by their horses, in this cache was five gallons of corn whiskey. Any way, when they returned to retrieve the supplies, he said a town had sprung up called Leadville--I gathered the loss of the corn whiskey was a greater loss than the possibility of a fortune from not staking out some claims.
