I hate to mention this, but I feel I have to. Could it be possible since both horses were bought sight unseen that the seller flat out lied about the gender of one of the horses? The whole thing is so strange because of the gelding left behind. Normally horse thieves don't leave a substitute in place of the stolen horse. Also, why weren't both horses taken? Was there anyone around keeping an eye on these horses or were they just dumped and left? Who was feeding and watering them for the few days they were waiting there to be picked up? My gut is telling me that the seller never had two mares to begin with. I could be wrong... but I bet I'm not...
