Photograph tooling, markings, old damage, silver, serial numbers, etc. Take photos after you've marked it with your ID to illustrate where the ID's are located so law enforcement, tack store owners etc. know where to check. The link below is an article that Bonnie Davis published on BAEN a few years ago with tips for protecting horses and tack against theft. Bonnie also recommends the "mark in more than one place" idea.

Someone who knows what they're doing can remove fenders, rigging, skirts, etc. The suggestion to mark more than one part came to me from a custom saddler who used to build and repair western saddles here in the Tri-Valley area. He said if you're going to make the effort to ID your saddle, spread the ID around and cover your bases...
