Don't know if it works...but I always write on my saddles. Underneath the saddle on the middle part that is sort of in-set for the horse's backbone...I write with a dark permanent marker my Driver's License Number. I also write it on the inside of my bridle Browbands.
I figure that way, any honest folks coming across the saddle might wonder about the number. Also, it makes it easier to identify.
