We used it for barking, and so does my friend. The problem is, they sometimes (at least with barkers) know when the battery dies, or in my friends case, know how to turn it around so it doesn't shock no matter how tight you adjust it. And you don't want to choke them. You said the yard is fenced, but is there a dedicated dog run that they can't dig out of or climb over? Lowe's has some dog runs on sale right now. They're not that big and if they can climb chain link you'd be in trouble but maybe something to try. Tying them up is dangerous. I've heard too many stories of dogs strangling themselves when tied. I was a dog trainer for 20 years & have lots of experience with e-collars. They can be effective when used properly for a variety of issues such as excessive barking. However for your situation I wouldn't recommend it. I agree w/ Mickeyfan... tie outs are dangerous, can & likely will cause you a bunch of other unwanted behavior issues. If your yard is fenced but clearly not secure it is worth the pennies to fix that. If that fix is really too costly then the largest, most secure dog run you can afford. If you go dog run make sure it is big enough for two & add extra toys & things like Nylabones if they won't fight over possessions, in addition to plenty of exercise. The underground wiring that goes with the ecollar for the yard can be costly. Plus I have personally watched MANY dogs take the shocks for freedom(O: Once the shocks are over & they have crossed the line its party time. Particularly since your dogs have already experienced the reward of breaking out. You also have two, pack mentality is a very powerful thing. How are they getting out?

I think its around 100 ft from the unit. Works awesome! It doesnt stop ahocking once over abwire lime the other system. Kept in 2 labs and 2 jrt for three years so far. Have back up batteries in stock and check them. We have left the collars off for a week at a time now, they dont test the boundry any more!!

I have the opposite problem....

Our yard is cross fenced, so all the dogs stay inside with no problem. However, neighbors jack russell somehow finds a way in and he is too big to sneak through the gate...hmmmm. I have no idea how he does it.... Sorry, can't say anything about e-collars, never used them, a good fence does the trick...

We're getting ready to sell our 8'X12' covered kennel if you're interested. (em me if you are) We use an e-collar on Ellie because she's so high drive that she's not trustworthy around livestock or cats. (ie: she loses it and allows the passion of the chase over-ride any self discipline) (in other words, she turns into a raving lunatic that won't listen) She is never outside 'on her own' unless she's in her huge dog yard or in the outside kennel. I haven't read anyone else's posts yet.. but it almost sounds like you need one of those electronic 'barriers' that you put around the yard. (can't remember what they're called).

The terrain on our property makes fencing very challenging. We ran wire around about 1 1/2 acres and it works wonderfully. Its not foolproof and we've had dogs learn to run through it occasion, but for our two dogs now it works like a charm.
