I feel for anyone trying to quit smoking because it is so, so hard! Is he on the patch? That can be very helpful in lessening the physical withdrawal symptoms that can be really horrible and makes it too tempting to smoke. If he used the patch then he could physically wean from nicotine that way. I don't know why anyone doesn't use the patch when stopping smoking and I think it's a God send. Also, there are a couple of medications that have shown to help a great deal of curbing the desire to smoke. Last, there are now some 12-step groups of smokers, I think it's called Nicotine or Smokers Anonymous. Smoking is truly an addiction and there seems to be more sucess in quiting when treating it as such. It isn't a bad habit but a true, very powerful addiction, both mental and physical. I think the mental component is what is responsible for people starting to smoke again, i.e. I'm too stressed out, I "need" a cigarette, I'm bored. The reasons people take up a cigarette are the exact same reasons people take another hit off the crack pipe, have a drink when an alcoholic, etc. There's been a big disservice in terming smoking as a "habit" because I think if people were able to have it treated like a very deadly addiction that more people would reach out for help and get addiction support. I wish him a tremendous amount of luck and success! I'm so sorry he is having to go through all of this.
