Posted by Norris Pyle on 3/31/2005, 12:07 pm, in reply to "Re: Avon Historical Hysteria" I am not proposing we bulldoze downtown Avon. I would like to see some common sense used when it comes to the use/retention of "historical" Avon. I have lived in Avon since 1979, probably longer than most of Avon's current population. I remember the fury surrounding everything and anything that would bring Avon into the twentieth century. The two most prominent things were the fight against sewers and the attempt by a couple of local residents, and a certain local lawyer who shall remain nameless, to prevent the building of the Avon library. Some people fought the sewers to prevent the development of Avon. They wanted to keep Avon the way it was in their parent's and grandparent's time. They were too stupid to realize that when the Feds entered the battle, it was over. As a result I have a monthly water bill that is ridiculours and has a sewer charge that is more than half the bill. When the levy for the library was approved, two locals and a certain lawyer, who shall remain nameless, tried to get the vote thrown out on a technicality, Some of us picketed, as was our right, their houses to protest they underhanded action. Fortunately, the courts did not agree with them. When Avon Commons loomed on the horizon, some people, and a certain lawyer, who shall remain nameless, tried to prevent it. Fortunately, a vote of the people took care of that. Speaking of Avon Commons, it seems somewhat disingenuous (?) for someone who benefited financially from Avon Commons to try to preserve "historical" Avon as they think it should be. I have not heard too many people way they would rather have the Pied Piper Inn back instead of the small park and gazebo. I have served on a couple of citizen tax appeal committes when some people protested their re-evaluation of their property. Some appeals went for the landowners, some went against. As far as your comments about North Ridgeville and Sheffield/Sheffield Lake. I agree that we do not want to emulate them. The big issue for me is support of the schools. When we were looking for a house in the area prior to our move, our real estate agent gave us a major piece of advice, "Don't move to Sheffied/Sheffield Lake because they will not approve a school levy." Things have not changed any in that respect. Ridgeville was experiencing major growing pains with their school system. We chose Avon and have been pleased, overall, with that choice. All three of my children attended and graduated from the Avon school system. Anyway, that is about it. Take care.
