1994 chevy cavalier

I can't figure out whats wrong. Its in automatic and when driving sometimes sputters and the gears start to grind down or something. It is not a fuel problem, already checked that.. Could it be a transmission filter.. anyone have that problem. or JUST PLEASE HELP
