I just bought a 1997 cavalier 2.2L and have found the same thing. The dipstick is suppose to be in back of the engine but all I see there is a plug where a dipstick could be. On the driver side of the engine is a cap labeled transmission fluid but no dipstick is attaqched to cap and no transmission fluid is visible. I have a repair manual but not much luck yet.
