Please respond if you know anything about the MAF

My 1993 mitsubishi mirage started stalling/sputtering one very hot, smoggy day. The garage did a diagnostic and said it as the mass air flow sensor (which they no longer make for this model). The next day I tried the car out (nothing had been done to the car except a diagnostic) and it ran fine. Will the MAF sensor cause problems during a very hot day (I know there's a thermistor component in the maf)? Is my garage crazy? WHAT'S GOING ON...AAAAGGGGGG!!!!
